Hyde Park is one of Chicago's most famous neighborhoods, most certainly so on the South Side, located along the south lakefront. Having played host to the White City, the University of Chicago, President Obama, the setting for Richard Wright's Native Son, and a host of eccentric residents from Saul Bellow to Clarence Darrow to Muhammad Ali, this part of town has more than its fair share of Chicago history. There is more than enough for a visitor to see here, and devoting a full day to exploring Hyde Park can make for a fine itinerary. Architecture buffs will have their hands occupied by the many Victorian mansions and Prairie School houses; anyone with an intellectual bent should be delighted by Hyde Park's independent bookstores, overawed by the University of Chicago's terrifying intensity, and intrigued by the Oriental Institute; and just about everyone will enjoy a trip to the stimulating Museum of Science and Industry or taking a stroll and a swim along the Point and the beach. Welcome Home, from our Board President

Welcome home! Welcome to our 4900 Drexel Cooperative. We are pleased to have you as a neighbor. We hope you find this place rightful to be called your home.

The 4900 Drexel Apartments were built in 1925. They consisted of 61 units with a mixture of studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom and 3 bedroom apartments. Some of the 2 and 3 bedroom units contained servant quarters. In the 1920s and 1930s, this area was primarily a Jewish community. During the 1940s and 1950s, the area changed to predominantly black Americans. In 1952, a group of black Americans decided to purchase the 4900 Drexel Apartments and convert them into a self-managed, non-profit cooperative apartment corporation: the 4900 Drexel Cooperative Apartments Corporation, Inc.

As you approach the building, you won’t be able to help but notice that our building runs along the peaceful, tree-lined Historic Drexel Boulevard and green space.

I am happy to call this place home. Our neighbors are friendly and invested in our diverse cooperative and its vibrant surrounding community.

Again, a warm welcome to you.

Nelson Williams, President

I love living in the beautiful, vintage building on a historic tree-lined street where I walk my dog each day. I also love taking a stroll down to 53rd where I can eat at some of my favorite restaurants and shop!” - Kimberly M.
